A little neglect may breed mischief- for the want of a nail, the shoe was lost; for the want of a shoe, the horse was lost and for the want of a horse, the rider was lost, and for the want of the rider, the battle was lost.
-Benjamin Franklin
Endeavours towards better corporate governance had progressed in the early 1990's (Cadbury Committee 1992, NACD US 1995) however, the first major stimulus for corporate governance reforms came as an aftermath to the South East and east Asian crises of 1997-98. The spate of corporate scandals that rocked the world in the early 2000's triggered another phase of reforms in this direction, this time more comprehensive and stringent.
In India , the initial drive for better corporate governance and disclosures was linked to the stock market scam of 1992 and the onset of international competition consequent to liberalisation of the economy. The first effort in this direction was the voluntary code issued by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) followed by the Kumara Mangalam Birla Committee to Naresh Chandra Committee (2002) and the present Companies (Amendment) Bill of 2003.
Taking cognizance of this pertinent issue, the Department of Financial Studies, University of Delhi , South Campus, is organizing a two-day National Seminar under the UGC-SAP on " Corporate Governance: The Emerging Dimensions " on March 19-20, 2004 to provide a holistic view, to the participants, of the various issues involved in Corporate Governance.
